Recreational Marijuana Laws: Massachusetts

Cannabis is legal for adult recreational use in Massachusetts. But there are some rules visitors need to know to stay safe and legal while enjoying the local cannabis scene.

🔹 Who Can Buy and Possess

  • Adults 21 years and older with a valid government-issued ID.
  • You can buy from licensed dispensaries only—no street deals.

🔹 Possession Limits

  • Up to 1 ounce of flower on your person.
  • Up to 10 ounces stored securely at home.
  • Up to 5 grams of cannabis concentrates (like wax, oil, shatter).

🔹 Where You Can Use It

  • Private property only: homes, private rentals, or cannabis-friendly stays.
  • No smoking or vaping in public, on sidewalks, or in cars.
  • Hotels and rentals may prohibit use—ask ahead or book 420-friendly lodging.

🔹 What’s Not Allowed

  • No consumption in public places or federal land (national parks, forests, beaches).
  • Don’t drive high—DUI laws apply to cannabis.
  • Never take cannabis across state lines, even into other legal states.
  • Flying with cannabis is still federally illegal.

🔹 Buying Tips

  • Most dispensaries are cash-only—bring cash or use on-site ATMs.
  • Some allow online ordering or express pickup.
  • Know your limits—Massachusetts doesn’t allow overselling.
